WITH ALL THY GETTING, GET UNDERSTANDING
This month, we share the love felt within the walls of Castro Valley Unity, share the light of our individual hearts illuminating our spiritual community (and beyond) and share the great and even greater possibilities that exist for us when we align with and live from Spiritual Truth!
It is our intention each week to explore and experience the deepest connection to Source we can create and the heights of joy and freedom to which we can soar when we live in possibility thinking.
The last two Sundays, I have said that a Spiritual Truth is that we are all in, and are always in, an evolutionary growth cycle, which means that no matter how available we are to experience the fullness of God, there is more.
I've said there is always more expansion to do and there are greater and even greater possibilities yet to explore, and then I paraphrased Science of Mind founder Dr. Ernest Holmes as saying that since we are finite, and at the same time expressions of the Infinite, there is always more to express.
I thought today, I would give you exactly what he said. It is in the Science of Mind text and is this: ". . . we reach out to Infinity and since we cannot encompass Infinity, we shall always be expanding and always enlarging our capacity to know and to experience."a
And he wrote: "The Law through which we operate is Infinite, but we appear to be finite; that is, we have not yet evolved to a complete understanding of ourselves. We are unfolding from a Limitless Potential but can bring into our experience only that which we can conceive. . . . As our understanding unfolds, our possibilities of attainment will increase."b
So those are his direct statements and I love the second one, because it introduces today's topic perfectly. Today is about increasing and unfolding our understanding.
The instructions to increase -- to unfold -- our understanding go back a lot farther than metaphysical teachings.
In fact, in Proverbs, Chapter 4, verse 7, King Solomon said: "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding."c
That is from the King James version, and I love the slight difference that appears in the Lamsa Version, which is a more direct translation from the original language of the Bible. It says: "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all your substance get understanding."
"With all your substance, get understanding." To me, that means get understanding with all your mind, heart, body and soul, with your emotions, your feelings and your imagination. It's the key thing. It's the game changer. Because as we get understanding with all our substance, our possibilities of attainment increase.
So, of course the question is, get understanding of what? I believe it is an understanding of three things all of which are addressed in some amazing words cited by Genevieve Behrend in Your Invisible Power: "My mind is a center of Divine Operation. The Divine operation is always for expansion and fuller expression and this means the production of something beyond what has gone before, something entirely new, not included in the past experience, though proceeding out of it by an orderly sequence of growth. Therefore, since the Divine cannot change its inherent nature, it must operate in the same manner in me; consequently, in my own special world, of which I am the center, it will move forward to produce new conditions, always in advance of any that have gone on before."d
There are three distinct elements in this quote that we will unpack so we can get a deeper understanding of each of them.
1. CENTER OF DIVINE OPERATION
First: "My Mind is a center of Divine Operation."
Say that with me, will you? "My mind is a center of Divine Operation."
What does that mean? I love the ancient description of God that says God is a circle whose circumference is nowhere and whose center is everywhere. If that is true, and I believe it is, then you are a center of God. You are a center point of Divine Operation.
Do you get the significance of that? Do you get the power in understanding that? Say it with me again, with hand on heart: "My mind is a Center of Divine Operation."
Here's a terrific Note from the Universe. Keep your hand on your heart as you insert your name into it: "[Your Name], you and I... we're older than the sun, wiser than the moon, and deeper than the depths of space. We've always been together, we'll always be together, and until thy Kingdom comes and we are known as One, nothing will ever change this. Whatever you can imagine, I can make happen. Whatever you want, I already have. And for as long as you have thoughts to think, dreams to weave, and seeds to sow, NOTHING, for us, will be impossible. Ungawa! Your other half, The Universe."e
This morning, I invite you to awaken to this Truth. Deepen into this Truth. Unfold a greater understanding with all your substance of this Truth.
Lao Tsu, the father of Taoism, once said: "At the center of your being you have the answer. You know who you are and you know what you want."f This is because your mind is a center of Divine Operation!
At the center of our being we know who we are and we know what we want. And what all of us want is to continually express our Divinity in greater and even greater ways!
At the center of our being, what we all want is to discover this gift of life given to each of us. We call this gift the I Am that I Am. The I Am that I shall always be.
In the Tibetan Book of the Dead, it says: "I came from the Light, I put on a coat of skins and I shall return to the Light."g
We are interested in the I Am that is the One who comes from the Light. That embodies a lifetime and shall return to the light itself.
With all thy getting, with all thy substance, get an understanding of this today, here and now! Because the power in that understanding cannot even be described.
2. DIVINE OPERATION IS ALWAYS FOR EXPANSION
Second: "The Divine operation is always for expansion and fuller expression and this means the production of something beyond what has gone before, something entirely new, not included in the past experience, though proceeding out of it by an orderly sequence of growth."
This is talking about transcendence, isn't it? I love that word. To transcend is to rise above or go beyond normal limits. Nothing is left out in the transcendence; it simply goes beyond what was known. And that's what this quote is saying.
So, I want to demonstrate this point. I can't take credit for coming up with this demonstration. Thanks to Religious Science minister Dr. Harry Morgan Moses for it.
I need 6 volunteers who have a bit of actor in them. Please come up here. [Line the volunteers up across the stage and have them act out each thing as you describe it, e.g. the first person acts out "fire" as you initially describe it and then every time you refer back to "fire," he/she will act it out again. The second person acts out "torch," and every time you refer back to "torch," he/she will act it out again, etc.]
Fire - in the beginning, there was fire, primitive fire; fire exists but we don't know exactly how to use it because it's all messy and all over the place; we wanted to light the cave, but we couldn't bring it in the cave. So transcending the idea of fire without any way destroying the fire . . .
Torch - we learned how to take primitive fire and use it to light our caves, but there's a problem of all that smoke. Plus, we can't leave the torch in there for very long, so transcendent to the idea of torch is . .
Candle - We take the fire from the torch to a little light. But not bright enough to light a large space and when a wind came along, it gets blown out, so then we figured out . . .
Lantern - inside, wind won't blow out the candle inside and we can use other things to fuel lantern. But still messy and limited; only lasts for a certain amount of time, so how can we get the darkness to have more permanent light? Well, we figured out . . .
Light bulb - transcending all of these things, but is fire still fire, right? Torch is still torch, candle is still candle and lantern is still lantern! Every one of these things is still here, and the transcendent idea was also present, it just hadn't yet been revealed. Remember the Note from the Universe:
"Whatever you can imagine, I can make happen. Whatever you want, I already have."
Now we have light bulb and, whew!, we're done. But wait, I want to take this outside and I can't take it outside, so what if I make it mobile?
Flash light - And that's fantastic! We've gone as far as we can go. And the fire still burns, torches still light, the candle still flames, the lantern is mobile, the light bulb is a whole new idea, then the flashlight gives us a new level of mobility and each one of these transcendent to the other , then suddenly, there's one more; transcendent of all of these and it not only is light, but it cuts metal!
It's laser beam!
Every idea transcendental to the next idea - fire, to torch, to candle, to lantern, to light bulb, to flash light to lazer - not destroying anything it's based on. Pretty fun way to depict transcendence or "the production of something beyond what has gone before, something entirely new, not included in the past experience, though proceeding out of it by an orderly sequence of growth," wouldn't you say?h
Let's give our "Ready for Sunday Morning Players" a hand! Thank you!
Transcendence is always there, but it takes consciousness to reveal it and that's where we come in.
3. THE DIVINE OPERATES EXACTLY THE SAME IN/AS ME
The third idea we want to understand with all our substance is: "Therefore, since the Divine cannot change its inherent nature, it must operate in the same manner in me; consequently, in my own special world, of which I am the center, it will move forward to produce new conditions, always in advance of any that have gone on before."
And it operates through our six mental senses or faculties that we explored over the past two weeks, which are: Imagination, Will, Intuition, Perception, Memory and Reason
There is a power for good in this Universe and I can use it. It will heal, multiply, restore, revitalize, make new, and move the mountain if you tell it to move the mountain.
This morning, we are getting the understanding, the deep understanding, that we are part of something that is Infinite that is here, that is now, that is everywhere. Your mind really is a center through which all the creative energy and power there is is taking form right now and as long as you are breathing, this is happening.
Before Genevieve Behrend studied with Thomas Troward as we discussed last week, she studied his writings. There was a passage from the Dore Lectures that she said she "endeavored with all her soul to enter into the spirit of his words." And that was the passage we have used today.
Let us enter into the spirit of these words by meditating on the idea that: "My mind is a center of Divine Operation. . . . The Divine operation is always for expansion and fuller expression and this means the production of something beyond what has gone before, something entirely new, not included in the past experience, though proceeding out of it by an orderly sequence of growth. . . . . Therefore, since the Divine cannot change its inherent nature, it must operate in the same manner in me; . . . consequently, in my own special world, of which I am the center, it will move forward to produce new conditions, always in advance of any that have gone on before."i
And so it is and so we let it be.
