Sunday Message for October 28, 2018

It was a dark and stormy night! A man's car broke down and he was walking to the nearest phone in the wind and rain. Slowly a car appears from out of the mist and veers toward him. It doesn't stop, but it's going so slow, he decides to open the door and get in. He doesn't have a terribly good feeling about this at all, and he looks over and there is nobody driving the car. Soon the car starts heading for the side of road when a hand reaches in the window and steers the car back onto the road. It's the hand of a ghost, he thinks, reaching in and steering the car. Then the hand pulls away out the window and the car continues slowly to move down the street.

This happens a few times and this guy is freaked out! Next time the car starts to go off the road and the hand comes in the window, he jumps out of the car and runs as fast as he can.

He comes soon to a pub, and he goes in and starts telling the other patrons about his experience -- about the GHOST driving the car. Pretty soon a couple of guys, dripping wet, walk into the pub, look at him and say, "Hey there's the guy that jumped in our car while we were pushing it in the rain!"

An appropriate Halloween joke -- and an appropriate introduction to our theme this morning:

Who Ya Gonna Call ..Ghostbusters!

Movie reminder -- three doctors of parapsychology, after having their research grant taken away and being evicted from their offices at Columbia University, went into private practice, selling their expertise in an effort to rid NYC of its ghosts. They were Professional Ghostbusters.

This morning, as we conclude our series focused on the master teacher's promise: "I have come so that you might have life and have it more abundantly . . ."a . . . we are going to look at busting our ghosts! What are your ghosts? Doubt, dread, worry, disbelief, belief in lack and limitation - the things that keep you from expressing the abundant life. And - really all those things boil down to one thing: FEAR

How can you bust them out? Greg Bradden writes of a rediscovered "ancient technology" in his book The Isaiah Effect. He's talking about nothing other than affirmative prayer.b

He says there are 4 tenets of prayer and healing:
Tenet 1, We Are Already Healed
Tenet 2, There Is Only One Of Us Here
Tenet 3, We Are In Resonance, "Tuned" To Our World
Tenet 4, The Technology Of Prayer Allows Direct Access To Our Bodies, One Another, And The Creative Forces Of Our World

The spiritual technology is affirmative prayer. The use of prayer in our daily lives gives us the privilege of choosing the direction of our thought. So we are in harmony with the Power greater than we are, and it brings our experience out of the darkness of fear and into the light of Truth.

It is a very powerful tool used to change our thought, our belief, and our experiences in a positive way.

Myrtle Fillmore said, "Prayer is an exercise to change our thought habits and our living habits, that we may set up a new and better activity, in accord with the divine law..."

And Myrtle said, "We are to concentrate all our attention upon the Truth of God, and the truth of our own being, upon the very things we would see taking place in our lives."c

Charles Fillmore wrote, . "If the mind of man is clogged with doubt, lethargy, or fear, he must, through his faithful knocking and asking, open the way."

He wrote, "We are to concentrate all our attention upon the Truth of God, and the truth of our own being, upon the very things we would see taking place in our lives."d

Or, as defined in Practical Application of the Science of Mind by Ernest Holmes and Willis Kinnear: "Effective prayer, based upon a faith that is logical and scientific, is an attitude of mind which is so convinced of its own idea - which so completely accepts it - that any contradiction is unthinkable and impossible."e

Charles said that "There are seven necessary conditions for true prayer:
- God should be recognized as Father.
- Oneness with God should be acknowledged.
- Prayer must be made within, in "the secret place"f
- The door must be closed on all thoughts and interests of the outer world.
- The one who prays must believe that he has received.
- The kingdom of God must be desired above all things, and sought first.
- The mind must let go of every unforgiving thought."g

We have our own professional Ghostbusters in Unity: the Prayer Chaplain. Those committed beings dedicated to their own consciousness work and deep spiritual understanding. They are trained through the study of Unity teachings in the art, science and skill of Affirmative Prayer. They are dedicated to the cause of helping others; and bound by a high code of ethics to respect your confidence.

We know that with God all things are possible.h Therefore, whatever the problem, there is always an answer. When a problem defies our imagination, when we cannot see what went wrong AND when we are willing to be healed of that within us which brought the situation about, a Prayer Chaplain can help.

A Prayer Chaplain uses their own mind to get clear about you and your desire, so that the One Mind in which we all live and move and have our being, will work positively in your life.

A Prayer Chaplain is one who holds to the truth about you in their own mind, refusing to believe in the power of the problem over the solution. Holding you in high regard as a spiritually free individual rather than one chained down in sickness and misery. One who knows the Truth about you when you are unable to know it for yourself.

Holmes wrote: It is the [Prayer Chaplain's] business to uncover God in man. God is not sick. God is not poor. God is not unhappy. God is never afraid. God is never confused. God is never out of place. The premise upon which all mental work is based is perfect God, perfect man, perfect being. There is a spiritual man who is never sick, who is never poor, unhappy; never confused nor afraid; who is never caught by negative thought. Browning called this "the spark which a person may desecrate but never quite lose."i

ANALOGY: Think of a pipe wrench. We know how it works and we may have used it a few times; however, sometimes we need to call the plumber to handle the job. This would be true for a multitude of circumstances; who do we go to for a job that's beyond our ability? We go to those that have the experience in a particular field.

There are times when doing prayer for ourselves, we don't feel that it's working. More than likely, we're not using the tool correctly. In cases like this, we can get in touch with a Prayer Chaplain.

They will have greater success in using the tool of Prayer for they have had the training and the experience to keep the clarity of consciousness which is needed to fulfill that Prayer. They are not as attached to your problems as you are. They are trained to see above the effect to the cause and to call a new causation forward.

So, let's address a few questions that often come up around using Prayer Chaplains:

No, Prayers are just as effective if the Prayer Chaplain is in your presence, on the telephone, or on the other side of the world. There is only One Mind, God's Mind and that Mind is everywhere present. This is the Universal Subjectivity or Creative Medium to which Dr. Holmes refers, and within which Affirmative Prayer does its work.

Yes. The Prayer Chaplain will also assist you in the process and use of prayer. For example, the following simple prayer alone can raise your consciousness and your level of acceptance of good in your life:

There is One Life, and that Life is God and that life is perfect and that Life is my life now. I declare that contained within this Divine Life is all that I need for a healthy, happy, prosperous life. I accept this good gladly, turning away from any appearance to the contrary. In deep and abiding gratitude, I release these words into Universal Law. And so it is. Amen.

Have faith in the healing power of the One Mind. Remember the words of Jesus: "The Father that dwelleth in me, He doeth the work."j

Release your problem to God. If the problem comes up in your mind later, dismiss it with a simple affirmation, such as, "Through prayer all things are possible. God is resolving this situation NOW."

Use the prayer given to you by the Prayer Chaplain as many times as necessary every day. Keep a positive attitude.

Use the practice of Vetura Papke (Ernest Holmes' practitioner) - Literally "wash your hands of it." When you have had a Prayer Chaplain pray for you and you think/worry about the situation again, find a sink and wash your hands, saying, "I have turned this problem/concern/issue over to God and so I have washed my hands of it." If you can't find a sink, just pretend to wash your hands.

No, but the work of the Prayer Chaplain is a professional service. The professional Prayer Chaplain has spent time in classes and study and consciousness work and must continue to work on their consciousness to be an effective Prayer Chaplain.

Just as you would pay any other professional for work they do, it is appropriate to tithe to the Prayer Chaplain for the time, dedication and energy it takes for them to know the Truth for you. Although the Prayer Chaplain will never ask for payment and will offer her services free.

But, what you pay for, you value. Something sets up in your own consciousness to receive the reward.

Ernest Holmes, Science Of Mind: "Mental or spiritual treatment should bring into actual manifestation the health and happiness which are our normal and divine heritage. Such healing includes the emancipation of the mind from every form of bondage through a new concept of God, which causes the heart to beat with joy and gladness. This healing power is the consciousness of the Unity of all Life and the spiritual nature of all beings. . . . The healing process, in so far as it may be termed a process, is in becoming conscious of this eternal truth."k

Are you steeped in Universal Principles of Spiritual Truth, Love and Law and can you blast a stream of harnessed energy at whatever you're afraid of, with power and authority? If not, call on a Professional Ghostbuster, aka, Prayer Chaplain to give you some strong spiritual support!
