A COVENANT FOR CHANGE
Today we conclude our last month's exploration of the BIG, BIG topic - Global Transformation. In May we looked at the idea that each of us can be . . .
. . . an AGENT for GLOBAL TRANSFORMATION.
. . . a BENEFICIAL PRESENCE in the world.
. . . a LIVING REMEDY on planet earth
. . . the FIRST DOMINO in a chain reaction for good.
And today, it is my deepest intent and desire to bring it all home and give you something tangible to walk away with that is meaningful, very meaningful to you. In fact, one of the most meaningful things you can have - A Covenant with God. What is that?
Well, the first question is, what is a covenant? [agreement, contract, promise, pledge]
Today, following the suggestion of New Thought mother Emma Curtis Hopkins in her book Scientific Mental Christian Practice written over a century ago, we are each going to have an opportunity to write a "Covenant with Goda to be a Beneficial Presence in the World."
Before we do that, I want to take a brief walk through the previous weeks of May.
And as I do this (whether you've been here for all of the Sundays or this is your first Sunday with us), I want you to be open to thoughts and ideas of "what is your part to play in global transformation?"
The first week, we talked about "living from intent" - a predisposition to be a certain way. And we asked the question "What would life be like if we walked around with a predisposition to be a Beneficial Presence . . .
. . . in our own families?"
. . . At our work?"
. . . As members of this spiritual community?"
. . . As voting citizens of this country?"
. . . As inhabitants on planet earth?"
Remember Ernest Holmes words: "Find me one person who is for something and against nothing, . . ."b
Find me one person who no longer has any fear of the universe, or of God, or of man, or of anything else . . .
Find me someone who has given all that he has to love . . .
Find me one person who can get his own littleness out of the way .
Find me one person who knows how to talk to God, really . .
Find me one person who communes with cause and effect.
Find me someone whose song is really celestial, because it is the outburst of the cosmic urge to sing . . .
The second week I extended (and I hope you accepted) an invitation to embrace the fullness and allness of who you are, realizing that the more you deepen your relationship with yourself - all aspects of yourself - the more you deepen your relationship with God.
I gave you an assignment that week to find someone you trust, whom you know really loves you. You were to share with him/her a deep fear, a dark secret about yourself, something you have been hiding, something even you may be ashamed of. Something that says to you that you are inherently flawed or bad or stupid. You were to tell them you wanted to do this so you can get it out in the open, which will in turn release the "hold" it has on you and so that you can see your Divinity right in the middle of it. I really hope some of you chose to do that!
The third week we GOT REAL by looking at the various stages of our spiritual evolution: Mortal - Metaphysician -- Mystic - Master
And recognized that: at the level of mortal we are part of the problem;
at the level of metaphysician, we realize our co-creative powers with Universal Good and that's really important and wonderful, but only the 2nd level;
at the level of mystic we are making conscious connection with the Divine - and of course seeing the Divine in others and here we begin to be that wonderful agent for change;
at the level of master - we combine the meta and the mystic - this is where we can really be a tremendous BENEFICIAL PRESENCE.
Last week we decided that Heaven Can't Wait and we explored creating it right here, right now!
That is where we've been this past month. Now it's time to make it personal for each of you - should you so desire to do that.
Today, each of you will have an opportunity to make a personal "Covenant with God to be a Beneficial Presence in the World." You have a Covenant form in your program.
Make A Holy Covenant with the God of your Being, and then step aside, realizing that your job is to continually surrender to a Power greater than you are. God's job is to do the rest.
In this context, a covenant means an agreement with Spirit, by which Spirit is to do all things for us and we do nothing.
What does it mean to do nothing? Sit and twiddle our thumbs?
Age-old joke about the man begging, pleading to God to let him win the lottery. Week after week after week. Eventually, the man hears God's voice, "Won't you help me out here and at least buy a ticket?"
No, it doesn't mean that - what it does means is to do nothing to coerce, to force, to manipulate or to will it to happen. It means not to try to worry it into being either.
It means "I will rest in the power of Infinite Love and Perfect Law to bring it about, and I will do what steps are put in front of me, when they are put in front of me."
But doing those steps will come out of the energy that it is already done, and I am just playing my part in its unfoldment, not from the energy that I have to MAKE this happen. Do you see the difference??
I would like to read to you the covenant made by Myrtle and Charles Fillmore. It says:
"We, Charles Fillmore and Myrtle Fillmore, husband and wife, hereby dedicate ourselves, our time, our money, all we have and all we expect to have, to the Spirit of Truth, and through it, to the Society of Silent Unity.
It being understood and agreed that the said Spirit of Truth shall render unto us an equivalent for this dedication, in peace of mind, health of body, wisdom, understanding, love, life and an abundant supply of all things necessary to meet every want without our making any of these things the object of our existence.
In the presence of the Conscious Mind of Christ Jesus, this 7th day of December A.D. 1892.
So, you will be crafting a statement or series of statements of how it is you desire to show up in the world as a beneficial presence. It can be as large or as "small" as you desire. It can relate to family, your personal life or something larger. No right or wrong. This is very personal.
PRAYER: I am a child of the living God.
I have within me the all-creating power of the Christ.
It radiates from me and blesses all whom I contact.
It is my life, my strength my courage,
My patience, my peace, my poise,
My power, my wisdom, my understanding,
My joy, my inspiration, and my abundant supply,
To this great power I entrust all my challenges and opportunities,
Knowing they will be handled in love and justice.
Father/Mother/God, I have laid all my desires on your altar, and I rest in your graciousness.
I know that Christ is the light of my mind, the love of my heart, the strength of my hands, the power of my legs, the understanding of my eyes.
So, my thoughts are illumined, my words are compassionate, my deeds are helpful, my vision is pure.
I effortlessly walk the Christ path.
And know that I am open to Spirit's guidance as I write my covenant with God.
I Encourage you to do whatever refining your Covenants may need, then print them out and frame them, keeping them somewhere where you can see them often.
