Sunday Message for June 7, 2020

PREPARING FOR YOUR BIG LEAP

How many of you would like to take a BIG leap into the next level of your life? Yes?

How many of you are ready to be a fuller expression of the Divine and experience a greater sense of connection, aliveness, happiness, love, creativity and abundance? We might even define that as being successful! Yes?

Would it be all right if your life got easier? Yes?

Yes!! Well, my friends, you are in the right place at the right time, and I guarantee you won't want to miss a single Sunday this month.

I ran across this amazing book by Gay Hendricks called The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fears and Take Life to the Next Level - and, for me, it sheds a bright and clear light on a phenomenon I have seen play out in my own life and in the lives of many.a

I want to introduce this phenomenon by sharing with you a scenario that appears in a wonderful book called Your Aladdin's Lamp. See if it rings a bell for you.

There was a negative, negative, negative cab driver from New York who moved out to Los Angeles and started working with Bill Hornaday.

Julius Podholz was his name. In a nutshell, with the help of Dr. Hornaday, Julius completely reversed his negative attitude toward life, and he experienced having much, much more connection, aliveness, happiness, love, creativity and abundance - in other words, success.

One day, shortly after Julius turned his life around, his wife went to see Hornaday to thank him for the amazing changes that had happened to her husband and in their lives.

Here is what Hornaday wrote: "I warned her that the rest of the way might not be as easy. It is a curious fact, which each discovers in his own fashion, that the experiences, the coincidences, the answers to prayer [all] come tumbling over one another in the beginning and then, once you're thoroughly convinced, suddenly there's work to do - and dry periods, too, until, sometimes, like the monk with the aching knees, the most devout find themselves saying: 'I believe, help thou my unbelief.'b"c

Have you ever found yourself there?
Things are going great,
You feel in the spiritual zone,
You feel so connected to God,
Your prayers and your affirmations are so powerful.
Honey, life is G-O-O-D and then wham! Something falls apart - perhaps everything falls apart! Anyone ever have that happen? Haven't we all?

When this happens, we can become really frightened and discouraged. We can even doubt that anything really had changed for us.

So, you might ask -- what's up with that? We've talked in the past about a process called "chemicalization"d that might be going on. Chemicalization, a term coined by Mary Baker Eddy the mother of Christian Science, is the chemical change that literally takes place in our thoughts and feelings, which is then reflected in our body and affairs. And things can appear to be a mess while this is happening.

And that all still makes complete sense to me. And, there could be something else going on. This entire month, with the help of this book, we will explore why this phenomenon happens - notice I don't say "We will explore why this phenomenon might happen," because it will happen to all of us. And, we will also look at concrete steps we can take to take the BIG LEAP past it.

See, why I said you will definitely want to be here this entire month?! So, are you all in? Sure? Ok, let's go!

BIG LEAP

Before we get to what might be going on that causes our good to come to a screeching halt, I want to establish a bit of a foundation.

The reason you said, "yes" to all those questions I asked you a few moments ago is this: Long before you came into this physical form, you made a handshake deal with the Universe to live within what Gay Hendricks calls your Zone of Genius. It is the Zone where you are most fully alive and most freely expressing your Divinity as it shows up through your unique talents and gifts.

We have within us amazing potential. It says in scripture that:
"The Kingdom of God dwells within,e"
"You are the temple of the living God,"f
"You are the light of the world."g

Each and every one of us has within us not only the innate potential to shine brightly and express fully, but the deep seated desire to do so!

Your Zone of Genius is your ultimate path of success and happiness, where your daily activities come from a place that is unequally you. They draw upon your special gifts and strengths. When you are in your Zone of Genius, you are free and happy, abundant, joyous, creative, etc., etc.

That is what is calling you - that is the Call of Your Genius. That is why you said "yes" to all of those questions!

But here, according to Gay Hendricks, is the challenge each and every one of us faces. He calls it our Upper Limit Problem - or ULP (like GULP) for short.

Hendricks suggests that each of us has an inner thermostat setting that determines just how much love, happiness, success, creativity and abundance we allow ourselves to enjoy.

Our thermostat setting probably got programmed in early childhood before we could think for ourselves. Or set by "race consciousness." Law of Averages (Troward); Financial Blueprint (Ecker); Came from Puritan work ethic; Religious beliefs - "store your treasures in heaven."

So when we exceed our inner thermostat setting, we will do something to sabotage ourselves, causing us to drop back into an old familiar Zone and not allowing us to get to or stay in our Zone of Genius.

In the definition of 'man' in the Metaphysical Bible Dictionary, Charles Fillmore writes: "Ideal man is the perfect man, the Christ, the offspring of Divine Mind. Manifest man should be as perfect as the ideal, and he will be when the individual identifies himself with the Christ. When he is identified with anything less than perfection he manifests some degree of imperfection."h

So, our Zone of Genius was always there, it was implanted by Spirit. The Upper Limit Problem has been added by the human mind. What the human mind has put there, it can take away. What the Divine has implanted cannot be uprooted; it can only appear to be covered up.

Until we become conscious of this phenomenon and make conscious change, whenever we expand beyond our Upper Limit thermostat by making more money or experiencing more love, we trip our Upper Limit switch and unconsciously do something to bring ourselves back down to the thermostat setting we're familiar with.

In short, we have tendencies to follow big leaps forward in our success with big mess ups!

Here's what it can look like: You make a leap by getting a terrific promotion at the job only then to experience a serious health challenge.

Or you embark on a fantastic, new love relationship and suddenly your ULP will enshroud you in a wet-wool blanket of guilt that keeps you from enjoying your new love.

Hendricks tells a story in the book of a couple who fell madly in love. They had never felt about anyone the way they felt about one another. They hastily got married and on the drive to where they were going to spend a short honeymoon, they pulled the car into the woods to have some privacy.

They spread out a blanket and let nature take its course. What they didn't know is that they rolled off the blanket and onto a bed of poison oak. It can take poison oak 24 hours to produce symptoms, but when it strikes, it's not pretty.

They were clients of Hendricks and they went to see him upon their return home. From the woman's perspective, she thought it was a sign from the Universe that they shouldn't be together at all.

The husband was a doctor and was self-critical and judgmental saying, "I've treated cases of poison oak before; I should have noticed what we were rolling in!"

Hendricks said that as he listened to their story, he saw a flashing neon sign that read Upper Limit Problem! Their thermostats weren't set high enough to allow them to fully bask in this wonderful new relationship.

There was a possible example of the ULP played out in a very, very public and tragic way. You can rent This is It, the documentary made of the rehearsals for Michael Jackson's come-back tour. Over 50 concerts sold out; 800,000 tickets sold in record time.

He seemed truly joyous, happy, inspired. Ready to do this. He was excited about this tour because he said, "his children were now old enough to understand what he does; and he was still young enough to do it."

It looked to me that during those rehearsals he was living in his Zone of Genius. He was doing and loving what he came to this planet to do. And he was giving many talented artists the opportunity to do the same thing. This concert was truly going to be a collaborative effort of genius.

And. perhaps, just perhaps, Jackson hit hard against - slammed up against would probably be more correct -- his Upper Limit. I, of course, don't know if that is true, but it struck me as I was watching the video that that could be exactly what happened for him.

So the next time you find yourself with a stomachache, a throbbing head or a stubbed toe, ask yourself if you might be Upper Limiting yourself. Sometimes a headache is just a headache, but sometimes if you look a little deeper, you'll find that you have tripped your Upper Limit switch. The good news is that you can consciously eliminate the need to do that.

We each deserve to experience wave after wave of greater love, creative energy and financial abundance, without the need to sabotage ourselves.

That's what I want for you, and I hope that's what you want for yourself.

This entire month, we are about eliminating the Upper Limit Problem and uncovering our Zones of Genius! Next week we begin to look at how to do that. For now, I am asking you to do two things:

First, make a commitment to take the big leap into your Genius Zone. Make a commitment to live from the place where you are a fuller expression of the Divine and where you are experiencing greater connection, aliveness, happiness, love, creativity and abundance; a place where life works and is easy.

When you consider the possibility of consistently feeling good and having things go well in your life all the time, you may find yourself thinking, "That's not possible." If so, I completely get it. I urge you, though, not to waste too much time worrying about whether it's possible. The only relevant question is whether you will let it be possible for you! If you would be willing to accept that possibility, you're on your way. Are you willing to make that commitment?

Second - You have homework this week. Start paying attention to your Upper Limit thermostat. How might it be operating in your life over the next week? Just notice. That's all I'm asking.

Taking the big leap into your Zone of Genius will require some internal changes. But we are going to explore these changes lovingly and gently and support one another this month in the process as we hold hands and take the Big Leap together!
