Sunday Message for December 13, 2020

BEING THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY DAYS

Let's start with prayer:
Father, Mother, God
Be in my life,
Be in my breath;
Be in my walk,
Be in my rest.
Be in this humble heart of mine;
Be ever present in my mind.

Be in my hands,
Be in my feet;
Be in my eyes
And in my speech.
Be in the smile I give away;
Be in each healing word I say.

Be in my work,
Be in my play;
Be in the struggles of each day.

Be in my prayers,
At dawn's first light;
Be in my dreams,
all through the night.

Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen
The prayer of my heart
Forever shall be;
I in You and You in me.

We sing:
I've got the JOY, JOY, JOY, JOY down in my heart!
I've got the PEACE THAT PASSETH UNDERSTANDING down in my heart!
I've got the POWER OF THE GOD WITHIN ME down in my heart!

This holy month, as this song so wonderfully says -- we are looking at the gifts of JOY, PEACE and POWER that we have down in our hearts!

Last week, we looked at the idea of RECEIVING them -- receiving them in the same way that we need to receive water by turning on the faucet -- the water is already there awaiting our receipt or activation of it.

The Metaphysical Bible Dictionary states:

     "The realization of mastery is attained by unifying the
     consciousness with Divine Mind as its one source, by prayer and
     meditation, thus attaining the Christ consciousness."a

Today, we are going to look at the idea of BEING these gifts and next week at GIVING them!

JOY
JOY -

Zephaniah 3:17: "The Lord your God in the midst of you . . . will make you to rejoice with gladness; he will renew you with his love, he will make you joyful with a praise as in the day of a feast."b

In a Family Circus cartoon, Billy and Dolly are watching a preacher on T.V. and Dolly tugs Billy on the arm and says, "Hear that? People in heaven have ever-laughing life."

The word "laugh" appears for the first time in the Bible very early at Genesis 17:17, when God informs Abraham that his wife Sarah will give birth to a son. Recognizing a divine sense of humor, it is written that:

     "Abraham bowed to the ground, and he laughed, thinking to himself, 'Is a child to be born to a man one hundred
     years old, and will Sarah have a child at the age of ninety?"c

God commanded Abraham to name his son "Isaac," which in Hebrew means "God's laugh."

In The Shining Center Imelda Shanklin writes:      "The life that is in us is a flame out of the heart of God. In the commonplace, the flame has its outletting in the
     ringing laughter and the spontaneous acts of childhood; in the free movements of the happy creatures of the
     wild; in singing hills; in newly lush fields; in the revivifying winds from sea and from mountain height.
     Whatsoever is limitless, whatsoever is not trammeled, whatsoever is new bears witness of the light of the
     flame."d

Here is a story about a lady that was oblivious to anything external to her, other than her own bliss, joy, or state of happiness. She writes:

The other day I had just come from a particularly exhilarating choir practice, and I was feeling heavenly! I drove by a religious bookstore and thought I would stop in and browse. At the counter they had a "Honk if You Love Jesus" bumper sticker. I bought it and put it on the back of my car, and I'm really glad I did. What an uplifting experience followed.

I was stopped at the light of a busy intersection, just lost in my heavenly thoughts and feelings, and I didn't notice that the light had turned green when, suddenly, I found lots of people who love Jesus. Why, the boy behind me started to honk like crazy. He must really love Jesus because pretty soon he leaned out his window and yelled "Go, Jesus, Go." Everyone else started honking, too, so I leaned out of my window and waved and smiled to all those loving people.

There must have been a guy from Florida back there because I could hear him yelling something about a sunny beach, and I saw him waving in a funny way with only one finger. My teenage son was in the backseat and so I asked him what that meant.

He was so caught in the joy of the moment that he could hardly catch his breath from laughing, but finally told me that it was the Hawaiian good luck sign. So I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign right back.

A couple of people were so caught up in the joy of this heavenly moment that they got out of their cars and were walking toward me. I just knew they wanted to pray with me, but then I noticed the light had changed again, so I stepped on the gas. It's a good thing I did, because I was the only car to get across the intersection.

I looked back at all of my new friends standing there and leaned out of the window, gave them a big smile and held up the Hawaiian good luck sign one more time as I drove away.

The nature of God is JOY. As a Being quality, JOY has no opposite, it simply is Pure Joy. It is not dependent upon circumstances and it doesn't change because of circumstances. It is God's timeless and changeless nature.

The more we know the Divine, the more we experience joy, and the more we choose joy, the more we experience the Divine.

PEACE
PEACE -

How I Used Truth H. Emilie Cady
     "Peace is an harmonious state of mind based on the divine idea of peace. Peace is the condition of harmony
     and tranquility that comes as a result of knowing our true relation to God.
     Because peace is a divine quality, an idea of Divine Mind, it is always a part of our spiritual nature. When we
     speak of "attaining a consciousness of peace" we are not thinking of something outside ourselves. We are,
     rather, considering the awakening of our own mind (thinking and feeling) to the idea of peace, so that it may
     manifest in our outer life."e

Peace in all circumstances.

Two young men grew up in a tribe in Africa as best friends. One became King, the other his Right Hand Man. The Right Hand Man had a habit of saying, "I am at peace because this is Good!"

Together they would go hunting and the Right Hand Man would load the gun and the king would shoot. Then one day the Right Hand Man made a mistake loading the gun and when the King shot, he shot his thumb off.

The Right Hand Man said, "I am at peace because this is good!" The King said, "I am NOT at peace because this is SOOOO not good." And the King in his anger put the Right Hand Man in jail.

About a year later, the King was alone hunting in what he knew was an unsafe area. A cannibal tribe captured him. They had him all prepared for dinner, tied to a stake, standing on a woodpile. They were ready to light the fire when one cannibal noticed that the King was missing a thumb.

These cannibals were very superstitious and would not eat anyone less than whole. The King realized that it was his missing thumb that had saved his life. He went right to jail and shared the whole story with the Right Hand Man and said he was wrong and that it was so "not good" that he had spent the last year in prison.

The Right Hand Man said, "No, this is GOOD -- I am so at peace!" The King asked, "How is it Good that I put my Best Friend in jail?"

The Right Hand Man answered, "Because if I had not been in jail, I would have been with you."

There is an article I read about the composer of The Peace Song, Jill Jackson Miller. The song is 50 years old this year. It was born out of fear, loneliness and depression. Jackson-Miller, who had been suicidal after the failure of her marriage to screenwriter Felix Jackson, later said that she wrote the song after discovering what she called the "life-saving joy of God's peace and unconditional love." . The song was popular enough to be used in the American Peace Crusade and earned her the George Washington Honor Medal from the Freedoms Foundation. She lived to be 82 years old

POWER
POWER -

This morning I want to spend a little more time talking about Power -- about a Power we have within us, which is greater than anything we shall every contact. Because it is when we recognize that we ARE this POWER that Peace, Joy and all the other gifts of spirit are expressed.

Metaphysical Bible Interpretation by Ed Rabel

     "'If God is for us, who can be against us?'f This sentence reveals anew the truth that God is the one and only
     power in the universe. All things must be working together for our good, and we cannot be subject to any
     opposing power, since God - the one power, intelligence, energy, love, substance, and truth, the all
     and in all - is ever active in and through and for us. And what is true of us is true of all mankind."g

This God Power is the Power of Creation.

We are surrounded by limitless Mind-Energy - out of which everything is made. It is the nature of the Universe to take form according to a pattern, through the process of Law. Through our belief and conviction we provide patterns for Its manifestation.

Interpret that through an example - appropriate as we near that mother of all meals -- the Christmas feast. How many of those feasts will involve Jello??
     *Jello mixture: Limitless Mind; infinite unformed supply
     *lobster or ring copper mold: the pattern provided by our thoughts, beliefs and convictions
     *refrigeration process: the process of the Law
     *a Jello lobster/ring: The manifestation

In the Revealing Word, Charles Fillmore writes:
     "When we identify ourselves with Him as our indwelling Father, He seems to us to be personal; however, it is
     not in a personal sense, but in the universal identification of ourselves with Him that we come into
     the God consciousness. The personal is limited. The universal, or God consciousness, is unlimited."h

That's the POWER we are talking about this morning! To rightly use this power, we must identify ourselves with that greater good or peace or joy which we desire.

We wrongly use this POWER when we think about our greater good, peace, joy, etc. as though it were impossible or even unlikely, or regretting that we do not now have it.

We must train ourselves to think about our good with a feeling that it is only reasonable and natural for it to be ours -- in fact, that it is already ours!

The essence of the All-surrounding Universal Mind becomes our experience according to the pattern we choose. IF we choose joy, then joy we will be, if we choose peace, then peace we will be! If we choose abundance, then abundant we will be!

Just as soon as you truly believe and feel with your whole being that your good is available, accept it, know it is yours, then it is yours! When you believe a good is yours, the Universe has no choice but to respond to that belief. NOW THAT'S POWER!

In order to make our desires concrete, that is, to bring them out of the invisible realm of Cause into the visible, tangible realm of our experience, there are certain steps we need to take:

FIRST -- Do what we've already been talking about -- consistently believe in it. Expect the good, the peace, the joy!

SECOND - Know that we have the right and ability to declare our good, our joy and our peace -- to accept the Creative Action of Mind in this particular way.

THIRD - We must know that we have whatever practical skills and abilities are necessary to bring about the good into experience and go out and use them.

FINALLY - Some may be sorely in need of money, peace and joy and have no place to work where they can earn those much needed funds or are not seeing ways to express joy and peace. If this is your case, continue to look about you for opportunities, but do that only as a secondary matter. Your big task is to understand the Activity of Mind and your creative use of It. Believe in It, declare into It, and accept the answer. Know that your order has been received and is being filled.

With this firmly implanted in your mind, you will then be rightly guided when you look for work, for ways to increase your business, for greater outlets for your skill, or whatever other good you may desire.

We are POWER; we are PEACE and we are JOY, and we are now going to make it so at the depth of our being through some affirmations together.

Close your eyes and repeat after me:

Today I choose PEACE. I let go of worrying about the shifting details of life as I trust God and I trust life. All is well in this moment. I am at PEACE.

I am established in joy because I am established in God. I choose to elevate my thoughts, words and attention to see the beauty, joy and brilliance of God everywhere. I see JOY, I choose JOY, I claim JOY, I Am JOY.

The POWER of All Creation resides in me and as me. The Universe is infinite and I now draw on It for any desired good. There is no limit to the good I can experience. Today, I claim my POWER.

I would like to end with a meditation called:
A Song of Joy, Peace and Power

   There is a Song upon my lips today;
   It sings of the glad heart and the happy ways of Life.
   I will listen to my song, for it carols to me the glad tidings of Great Joy, of Love, of Peace and Power.
   It tells me of the Wondrous Journey of the Soul and the Boundless Life of which my life is a part.
   I am filled with God's joy, peace and power. (say it with me)
And so it is. AMEN.
