OMNIPRESENCE, OMNIPOTENCE AND OMNISCIENCE
It is a tradition in February to explore the topic of love, and I know that those not in romantic relationships often cringe at the thought. But, I want you to know that you are safe this month, because while our theme is "On the Wings of Love," it's the Wings of the Love of the Divine we are going to talk about.
Each week this month, we are looking at different aspects of the L.O.V.E. of the Divine as we spread our wings and fly into:
* L - Living in Light & Laughter, which we definitely did last week
* Today is O - Exploring God's Omnipresence, Omnipotence & Omniscience
* Next week is V for Vision & Vitality
* And finally, E for Enlightened Enthusiasm
GOD'S O. O. & O.
Today . . . God's Omnipresence, Omniscience & Omnipotence. How many of you learned of these terms in the religion of your childhood?
* God is Omnipresence, meaning ever and everywhere present
I have a story about God's Omnipresence:
The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray:
"Take only ONE. God is watching."
Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table, was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies.
A child had written a note that said:
"Take all you want. God's watching the apples."
* Again , God is Omnipresent, eyes on the apples as well as the chocolate chip cookies!
* God is Omnipotent, meaning all power and powerful, and
* God is Omniscient, meaning all-knowing
And how many found the idea of an ever-present, all-powerful and all-knowing judge/condemner a bit troubling?
Nowhere, nowhere, in this book [Talks on Truth] will you find anything that says God condemns or judges.
Listen to this from the Science of Mind textbook: "It is impossible for a sane person to believe that God delights in condemning or damning anyone. God is natural Goodness and eternal Loving-Kindness, and holds nothing against anyone."a
Or this: "No one judges us but ourselves. We need not fear either God or the devil. There is no devil, and God is Love."b
In fact, nowhere in this book will we find anything other than references to God as the very Essence of Love.
Listen to these simple statements: "Ultimately we shall see that the Universe rests on the shoulders of Love; that God is Love. . ."c
and this: "God is Love. . . ; the Love of God is omnipresent . . [oh, there is one of our words!] [It] is the Divine givingness: the eternal outpouring of Spirit through Its creation."d
and this: "A universal sense alone bears witness to the divine fact: God is Love and love is God."e
And I love these moving words from Unity co-founder Charles Fillmore in Talks on Truth: "The love of God for His children is beyond description - a love so tender and so deep that it cannot be mentioned in the same breath with the ordinary love as known by the world. The great love of Being is deeper and wider than the thoughts and the words of humanity have compassed since the beginning of language."f
So, we believe that:
* God as Love, not as judge, is Omnipresent - everywhere present, surrounding, enfolding, filling every nook and cranny of existence! Filling every nook and cranny of you!
* God as Love, not as condemner, is Omnipotent - All power and all powerful .
Fillmore tells us: "God is our Father-Mother, the one inspiration of all that we do, of all that we are. Why for a moment ignore this one All-Power? Why look to the insipid without when the inspired within forever sparkles with the vintage of eternal youth, health, wisdom, life?"g
* God as Love, not as critical parent, is Omniscience - All knowing.
from Talks on Truth: "If you can comprehend a state where pure Mind exists free from the limitations of time, space and condition, you can grasp in a degree the working field of pure knowing. There is within everyone such a place - the 'secret place of the Most High.'"h
Now this kind of Omnipresence, Omnipotence and Omniscience is an entirely different story from our earlier understanding, isn't it? This is what I want us to get at a very deep level today. This is what I want us to embrace and to feel into!
Sometimes it helps to have an illustration in this earthly plain, because how do we experience God, really, but through our human experience? Sometimes it is internal - through feelings, visions and knowings. Sometimes it is through outer experiences.
This illustration comes from Vietnamese Buddhist Thich Nhat Hanh in his book Peace is Every Step. He talks about the idea of "Interbeingness," meaning within everything is everything.
And for our purposes this morning, I will expand that definition to say that within everything is everything and that everything is an expression of God's omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient Love.
If you really get that, then you will see clearly that this sheet of paper is God. What, you don't see that? OK, we all have some work to do. That's OK. I do too!
According to Thich Nhat Hanh, floating above this piece of paper is a cloud. Why? Because without a cloud, there will be no rain; Without rain, the trees cannot grow; and without trees, we have no paper.
The cloud is essential for the paper to exist. If the cloud is not here, the sheet of paper cannot be here either.
If we look into this sheet of paper even more deeply, we can see the SUNSHINE in it. Without SUNSHINE the FOREST cannot grow. And so, we know that the SUNSHINE is also in this sheet of paper.
And if we continue to look, we can see the LOGGER who cut the tree and the RIVER that brought the logs to the mill are in the paper.
And we see WHEAT. We know that the logger cannot exist without his daily bread, and therefore the wheat that became his bread is also in this sheet of paper. The logger's FATHER and MOTHER are in it too.
When we look in this way, we see that without ALL OF THESE THINGS, this sheet of paper cannot exist.
Looking even more deeply, we can see OURSELVES in this sheet of paper too. This is not difficult to see, because when WE look at a sheet of paper, it is part of our perception. Your mind is in here and mine is also. So we can say that EVERYTHING is in here with this sheet of paper.
We cannot point out one thing that is not here -- TIME, SPACE, THE EARTH, RAIN, MINERALS IN THE SOIL, THE SUNSHINE, THE CLOUD, THE RIVER, THE HEAT, YOU and ME. Everything co-exists within this sheet of paper.i
This sheet of paper is, because everything else is. WE are because EVERYTHING ELSE is. This piece of paper is a physical manifestation of God's Omnipresence, Omnipotence and Omniscient Love!
And so are you! Discover the reality of God's presence—an almighty Love within you NOW. And whatever may be going on in your life right now - if there is discord, disease, discomfort, distress, know that God's omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient Love are your perfect life. Call a revealing of the Truth forth in any of these areas by recognizing your oneness with God's Love.
Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth and the truth will set you free."j Many of us know about the Truth, but it remains just an intellectual process. Our intellect must be spiritualized, must be brought into the heart.
We often can live a kind of surface life, knowing about things - but not ever understanding. We give new birth to ourselves, by KNOWING the truth.
The time will come when we realize there is nothing to heal. There is only something to KNOW. And that Something to know is that God's Love is everywhere present, is all powerful and knows all that needs to be known, and that Love is your love.
New Thought founding Mother Emma Curtis Hopkins, in her book Scientific Mental Christian Practice, has some very powerful affirmations. Let's do them together this morning:
The Good I am seeking is my God,
My God is my Life.
The Good I am seeking is my health,
God is my health.
The Good I am seeking is my strength,
God is my strength.
The Good I am seeking is my support,
God is my support.
Life is God,
Truth is God,
Love is God,
Substance is God.
God is Intelligence,
Omnipresent, Omnipotent, Omniscient.
God is Life,
Omnipresent, Omnipotent, Omniscient.
God is Truth,
Omnipresent, Omnipotent, Omniscient.
God is Love,
Omnipresent, Omnipotent, Omniscient.k
Emma tells us: "Have some special time to make [these] Statements of Being. This will make you a great thinker. The mind of God will think through you. The words of God will speak through you. The joy of God will sing through you. The skill of Spirit will work miracles through you. The . . . beauty of God will inspire you. The love of God will melt the hard lot of humankind before you. You will be so one with your words that you will be able to say with Jesus Christ, 'I and the Father are one.' You will drop off the garments of flesh. You will see that by speaking Truth you are Spirit, and that by speaking Truth you are Omnipotent."l
I want to end our time today with meditation and activity which gives us the opportunity to feel God's Presence Everywhere . . . .
Relax. Feel your breath going in and out. Become very aware of your breathing . . . Now reflect on the Presence of God in the atmosphere everywhere around you . . . Spirit and Breath come from the same root word. Sense the Love of God everywhere around you, going in and out of you with each breath . . . this is the OMNIPRESENCE of God's Love.
Focus on my voice and recognize that as it goes in your ears, the vibration sends a message to your brain which translates the vibration into something that you understand. . . . Know that this is the OMNISCIENCE, the all-knowing Intelligence of God's Love.
Turn your attention to the sensations within your body . . . notice the feeling of your skin, the touch of your clothing on your skin . . . Feel the sensations in your mouth, your tongue resting on your teeth . . .
Notice any bodily sensations and reflect that every sensation is the biochemical process of the Energy and Power that is the Creative Life within you. Feel God's power - God's OMNIPOTENCE -- at work within you.
And now take this outside of yourself and in a moment, not yet, I am going to ask you to open your eyes and as you do, realize that everything you are looking at is a manifestation of God's Love. . .
Now open your eyes and in the silence, look around the room at everything and everyone and say to yourself . . . "So this is what God's Love looks like." Look at fellow congregants . . . look at the walls . . . look at the plants . . . look at the pews . . . look at the paper in the pews . . . "So this is what God looks like." Realize that everywhere you look, you are looking at the Ever Present, All-Knowing, Power of God's love in expression.
