MAKING THE LEAP BY DISMANTLING HIDDEN BARRIERS
Let us start with prayer: Mother, Father, God; In view of the systemic racism and the death of George Floyd we pray about the racial injustice in this world. Help us to see clearly what is now happening and what is ours to do personally.
As Dr. Martin Luther King wrote in his Letter from Birmingham Jail, "We are caught up in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied to a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly."
And we pray for all those affected by this covid pandemic.
We know that God is a Love that has no end and a Power that knows no bounds. God's healing power of Divine Life is restoring, healing, and revitalizing our world in this very moment. We let go of any fears or anxieties, and we affirm that all are safe, healthy, and protected. We bless all those who support us in maintaining vibrant radiant health. We express Divine Life in all we think, say, and do. We bless our global family with radiant health, peace of mind, and abundant love
I asked you last Sunday if you were ready to take a BIG LEAP into:
a fuller expression of the Divine;
a greater experience connection, aliveness, happiness, love, creativity and abundance; and
a life that is simply easier.
Most of you told me "yes" - admittedly, some of you more enthusiastically than others! But, nonetheless, you told me "yes," so that is what we are doing, and we are using the book The Big Leap: Conquer your Hidden Fears and Take Life to the Next Level by Gay Hendricks. I absolutely love the graphic on the cover. It is of a goldfish jumping from a little bowl into a much bigger one.a
Did you know that if a koi (Japanese carp) is kept in a small fish bowl, it will grow to be 2 to 3 inches long?
If you put it in a larger tank or small pond, it will grow to 6 to 10 inches long.
If it lives in a bigger pond, it will grow to a foot and a half.
But if it lives its life in a large lake, it will grow to 3 feet long.
We are somewhat like that fish. The bigger our container, the bigger we will grow. This month is about expanding our container!
Let's do a very brief review of last week: Long before you came into this physical form, you made a handshake deal with the Universe to live within what Gay Hendricks calls your Zone of Genius. It is the Zone where you are most fully alive and most freely expressing your Divinity as it shows up through your unique talents and gifts.
It is where you are experiencing joy, love, abundance, creativity, fulfillment - we might lump that all together and call it success. It is where you are blessing the world with all you have to offer.
But somewhere along the line, an inner thermostat was set. It is this inner thermostat that determines the amount of love, creativity, happiness, abundance and success we will allow ourselves to experience. For some, it was set pretty low.
Hendricks calls this the Upper Limit Problem. When we exceed our setting, we tend to sabotage ourselves (usually unconsciously) so that we can return to the old, familiar setting where we feel comfortable and secure.
The good news is, and what we are exploring this entire month, is that you CAN consciously re-set your thermostat and go fully into your Zone of Genius! We can absolutely take a big leap into the larger bowl!
It is absolutely possible, and today we will begin to make the leap by looking at what keeps us in the small bowl and how we can start making the leap out of it!
Hendricks suggests that pretty much every one of us has at least one - sometimes two or three - of four hidden barriers.
All four barriers have something in common: although they seem true and real, they are based on beliefs about ourselves that are neither true nor real. The fact that we unconsciously accept that they are true or real is the barrier that holds us back!
As I share with you what the barriers are, I ask you to lovingly assess where you might be with them. Begin by considering the possibility that you have at least one hidden barrier. Even if you are already pretty darn successful (remember our definition earlier), you may well have a hidden barrier holding you back from even a higher level of expression. By the way, I will tell you when we come to mine!
The first step in dismantling them is to shine the light of awareness on them!
Barrier #1 - Feeling Fundamentally Flawed
Here is the Upper Limit Mantra that comes from this first barrier: I cannot expand into my full potential because there is something fundamentally wrong with me.
I was raised with the idea that my older brother and my younger sister shone like stars and I was just 'eh'. Not as good as. Somehow I was the flawed one. Perhaps this is just the middle-child syndrome of not being enough. Or perhaps it's just being raised in the 40's as a female. We weren't supposed to shine, we were supposed to serve others. In truth my mother was just trying to protect me from what she experienced as a child. She over-protected me with the best of intentions. But I thought there was something fundamentally wrong with me.
But, my friends, how can this possibly be true? It absolutely cannot - because you are made in the image and likeness of Infinite Perfection!
If you recall, I did a worthiness anointing here in service about six months ago. Do I need to do it again? I have my wand here if anyone needs it again. Let's do it right now just in case. I hereby anoint you absolutely worthy and fundamentally perfect!
The fear of being fundamentally flawed brings with it a related fear. It's the fear that if you did make a full commitment to living in your Zone of Genius, you might fail. It's the belief that even your Genius is flawed, and that even if you expressed in a big way, it wouldn't be good enough. This belief tells you to play it safe and stay small. That way, if you fail, at least you fail small and maybe nobody will notice.
Barrier # 2
Barrier # 2 - Disloyalty and Abandonment
Here's the Upper Limit Mantra for this barrier: I cannot expand to my full success because it would cause me to be disloyal to my roots and leave behind people from my past.
I have seen this a lot with people whose families are from different religious backgrounds. They come into the empowering teachings of Unity, they start to apply what they have learned here and their lives start really transforming for the better, and their families of origin are not happy.
The guilt you feel makes you put on the brakes, holding yourself back from your Zone of Genius and even keeping you from enjoying the success you already have. You may even follow breakthroughs of success with bouts of self-punishment.
Barrier #3 - The Crime of Outshining
Of course, this barrier has a mantra also: I must not expand to my full success, because if I did I would outshine _____________ and make him/her look or feel bad.
I was always protecting my brother's ego. I would have never risked outshining him. He was my hero. And as long as I was less than him, he would protect me. I may not have been consciously aware of this at the time, but that is how it played out.
This is also common among gifted or talented children. They get a lot of attention, but they often get strong subliminal messages not to shine too much. One unconscious solution is to turn down the volume on your genius so others won't feel threatened. The other is to continue to shine, but turn down the volume on your ability to enjoy it. If you appear to be suffering, you can get empathy and sympathy from others instead of jealousy.
Example in the book: pianist Joseph whose sister, also a gifted musician, died at the age of 8. His parents later bought him a piano, but said when they gave it to him, "we never could have afforded this if you sister hadn't died." The barrier was established in that moment.
Finally, Barrier #4 -Believing that More Success Brings a Bigger Burden.
Here's the mantra: I can't expand to my highest potential because I'll be an even bigger burden than I am now.
Hendricks writes: "If we remove the guilt of the crimes we have been convicted of before we walked into kindergarten, we are liberated from the main issues that trigger this Upper Limit Problem."b
Here they are again - I cannot expand into my Zone of Genius:
because there is something fundamentally wrong with me;
because it would cause me to be disloyal to my roots and leave behind people from my past;
because if I did, I would outshine _____________ and make him/her look or feel bad; and/or
because I'll be an even bigger burden than I am now.
I really encourage you to get the book and explore the rich depth Hendricks goes into about how these hidden barriers appear in our lives and shifts and changes we can make -- because we don't have the time to go into all of it now. But we do know that the first step to transformation is awareness!
We have something really important to do now.
I want you to hear this - really, really hear this.
It is your Divine Right and your Divine Destiny to dismantle these barriers.
It is your Divine Right and your Divine Destiny to live from and in your Zone of Genius.
You deserve to be there and the world needs you to be there.
And remember, all four barriers seem true and real, but they are based on beliefs that are neither true nor real.
Barrier dismantling mantras:
If you have the Fundamental Flaw barrier, say:
I thrive in my Zone of Genius because I am the Presence of God here on earth;
If you have the Disloyalty and Abandonment barrier, say:
I thrive in my Zone of Genius and love and bless _______;
If you have the Crime of Outshining barrier, say:
I thrive in my Zone of Genius because as I let my gifts shine, I silently give others permission to let theirs shine as well (taking a line from the famous Marianne Williamson passage).
And finally, if you have the Being a Bigger Burden barrier, say:
As I release all sense of burden or obligation, I freely and easily thrive in my Zone of Genius.
So, let us pray together:
Father, Mother, God; help us to realize that we are the Presence of God here on earth. How could we be any less than that? We now love and bless our families and those we grew up with knowing that they are on their right and perfect path, as are we. We know that as we let our gifts shine, we silently give others permission to let theirs shine as well. We now release all sense of burden or obligation so that we may freely and easily thrive in our Zone of Genius. And so it is. And so it ever shall be. We have come to live freely and joyously on this earth and we shall continue to do so, and so it is.
